Setting up a domain for your server

How to set up a custom domain for your server like myserver.xyz!

1. First you need to buy your domain from a domain provider like Namecheap, GoDaddy or Porkbun. We'd recommend Namecheap as we find it the simplest for us and clients. The following examples will also be for Namecheap.

2. Once you've got your Namecheap account and domain, go to "Domain list" and click "manage" for your domain. From there you'll need to go to the "Advanced DNS" tab.

3. Now you can create an "A Record" which is necessary to have your domain connect to your server's IP. At the bottom left, there should be an "Add new record" button. With this new record you'll need to select "A Record" as the type. Then you need to put either "@" or "www" for the host, putting "@" will make it point directly to the domain like myserver.xyz while putting "www" will make it point to www.myserver.xyz Finally you'll need to put your server's IP (without port) in the value field.

4. With this you should be able to use your domain to connect to your server, but it may take up to 5 minutes for the A Record to start working.
